I spotted this box at the Antiques shop at the Chilton Garden Centre complex near Didcot. This box was a disaster item when I bought it , the whole thing had been in water at some time; the hinges were broken and the lid was right off. The woodwork was all warped with cracks and splits everywhere - but at least all the bits were there !
There was no haggling allowed on the price, and it cost me £9, which was a fair price.
It took a lot of time and patience to reshape and glue the wooden box and fit new hinges. The lock needed careful repositioning , and of course I had to make a key! The result was still a rough looking box, but it did work very well - perhaps it will mature with time! To use as a demonstrator box, I made up a square top battery with a couple of terminals on the top with a three volt battery in it, and the ‘shocking’ output is very good

This box has a brass sleeve over the transformer core to vary the output. A switch is fitted to select P or S to choose the output power level. It has a drawer to store the applicator tools. |
